The dictionary definition is "the outside limit of an object, area or surface." when i think of edges i think sharp and corner. Edges are everywhere, photographs, frames, face and edges of edges. In this unit we will look at making edges within edges and explore the relationship involving photography.
Home Learning: Take 20 pictures on the theme edges
We were set homework to take 20 photos about edges without any explanation and we had to find put what it is about.
EDGES - MIRROR
Sir gave us 2 mirrors each and a camera and me and my group made really cool illusions with them and some look like the mirror isnt there. It was a very a fun lesson. This relates to edges because when we put the mirror it creates more edges.
Paper Photoshoot:
The first photoshoot we done we started doing it outside in the corridor but there wasn't much contrast between light and dark because it was too light so we then went to the darkroom where the only light would be the flashlight and here is the results:
what went well: I found this effective because there is a sharp line between shaded and unshaded area. It looks abstract and only got the paper and background in. Theres a lot of contrast, worked well because we used the dark room.
This is not effective because there isn't different shading and there isn't different tones therefore next time i will experiment with the flashlight to get different light and dark areas.
latest photoshoot
This was effective because we experimented with 4 mirrors which was an idea completely different from everyone else. this was effective because it created an illusion.
This could be better if we tried a diffrent angle so the subject is the only thing in and you cant see the camera or hands
Old photographs
for this activity, we had old photographs and mixed, cut and merged them to create really cool designs which made you guess and think. I really enjoyed this because ive never made something like this and ill be trying to do the same for my own old photos.
Alma Haser
ALma haser is a very intersting photographer from Germany. Born into an artistic family and is living in London at the moment. She specialises on carefully constructing potratiure guided bny her creativity. Haser develops her skills by using paper folding techniques lnown as oragami with detail. the picture]s shown are from her famous cosmic surgery series. Her art work is seen as intruging but disturbing; in my opinion i find her work very interesting and i want to make photos with oragami as a response to her work.
Frank Vitturi comparison
Robert Frank's 'Sick of goodbys, is a photograph of 'sick of goodbys' written on something with weird ink. Theres's also a hand picking up something/someone small, there's also obscure objects and a door and unusual shadows. In the other photograph, Lorenzo Vitturi 'Red', there are plants and red flowers. It looks like he tried to make a structure with rocks. The first image is portrait format and so is the second one. I find it unusual that in the first pick goodbyes is spelt incorrectly as 'goodbys'! I find that aswell as that creepy and who is that?
A difference between Frank and Vitturi's image is the the first one is in black and white but the other one is in colour, however a similarity is they are both in portrait format. They are also a bit different because the first picture the subject is in the background however the second one the background is in the foreground. In the second one i'm most interested in the background because its super cool
In the first image, there are edges everywhere. The edges are around the portrait picture, mirror, edges around the writing. The first image helps me understand the relationship between edges and photography because of the different reflections of edges. If i was i meet Frank, I would as him if he deliberately misspelt goodbye wrong and ill ask Vitturi what are those rocks and what are they for?
Jelle martens
I like this artist work because its smart how she mixed her own photographs with block colours and triangles and it blends nicely. This helps to think about edge because of the edge of the triangles join to make one big picture. I learn from martens that good photograph aren't just taking the picture but mixing other images together. I could infleunced by picking one of my images and editing and not only using triangles but different shapes.
Photofusion and Tate Modern trip.
I enjoyed seeing Dafna Talmor's images at photo fusion because her picture were very smart and intriguing with the orange line and i enjoyed she was about to explain the technique she used. I was surprised when she explained how she done it that she didn't use fire or heat to make any of the orange lines.
Final edits
Assesment:
Introduction
The assessment was about EDGES! We had to pick 1 or 2 pictures and take a photograph of the photograph in different interesting places and respond to edges. We were given 2 hours to photograph, upload and explain on our weebly. I wanted to take different pictures like cropping a part of the photograph and making it out of focus and experimenting in different parts of the school. Up, down, sideways and everywhere. I think i was imaginative with the places and also persistent because i stuck with difficulty when i couldn't reach a place.
Evaluation
WWW: I think this is effective because i didn't need the full picture for this to be a nice photograph also i also found effective esra hand makes another edge in the picture
EBI: i was a little more inquisitive and made cooler illusions.
Final outcome
Evaluation:
WWW: I decided to merge 2 images together 3 times to make one big picture. I think my final outcome is effective because the topic is edges and there are 6 pictures with lots of edges in each and i have combined to create more edges. I enjoyed making this because i like photoshop and i got to use that more. I am pleased because i put as many edges as possible in the final outcome. I have used the the persistent habit of mind i creating my final outcome because when i printed my photoshop picture but it came smaller than i wanted i tried again and it came smaller so i trie the 3rd time and it finally came out the sae i wanted. I used cutting, trimming, photoshop and re arranging for my final outcome.
EBI: If i had more imd, i would include the pictures i produced the pictures in the dark room. This will improve my outcomes because it will have more edges and interesting pictures. In future, u would like to learn and include weaving. I realise that i could have refined my project a bit more. For example, i could have thought about the spicing on the canvas better. The habit of mind i need to strength most is wondering and questioning because i could've thought about the other pattern i could've made before i took the picture.
